Character Description from the Director:
Child 1 (Sofia) & Parent 1 (Latina mom): Maria is a present Latina single mother, attentive without hovering. Sofia is her daughter: curious, playful and prone to the kind of drama that only a teenager can generate.
They butt heads over screen time and circle back to each other over food. Their home moments include eating the meal they’ve just cooked together, and a front-porch end-of-day scene where Maria puts her phone down and actually listens. Their public moment: it’s dusk, a stadium is emptying after a big game, but Sofia and two of her friends remain on the bleachers, talking and connecting.
– Parents meeting their kids friends, shaking hands and/or waving on front porch or yard
– Parent and child sitting on the front steps or front porch of a house
– Two or three kids leaving the front door of a house
– Laughing and smiling at the camera together.
– Sitting on bleachers, after a game. Kids, with kids, and parents with kids
– Parents talking to parents
Child 2 (Mark) & Parent 2 (Caucasian dad):
Mark is a father who expresses himself through action rather than words. Big conversations do not come easily to him, but showing up does.
Mark may not always be great at big conversations, but he’s always working to get his son, Tyler, to join him in the garage for one-on-one father and son time. Their key public moment: hiking together followed by fast food in a parked car. Tyler finally tells his dad what’s been happening at school. Dad listens well.
– Parent and child giving each other a hug (kitchen/living room)
– Sitting in a car, having a conversation
– Eating fast food in a car, talking to each other
– Hiking together, or walking on a trail
– Parents talking to parents
Child 3 (Julian) & Parent 3 (Maya – Mixed Couple Mom) + Extra (Chris – Mixed couple Dad):
Maya and Chris are a mixed couple with a sharp sense of humor, which their son Julian pretends not to appreciate.
Their home moments show the family as a functioning unit: Maya and Julian sit at the kitchen table working on homework together, while Chris is seen cooking dinner in the background. Their public moment finds Julian on the edge of his friend group, body language pulled slightly inward, not ready to participate in whatever is being offered.
– Parent helping child with homework at the kitchen table
– Teen friends hanging out together. One saying no. (yard)
– One teen walking away from two other teens (yard)
– Several kids/teens sitting in a circle, shot from far away – hanging out
– Parents talking to parents
Child 4 (Lani – Daughter) & Parent 4 (Scott – Polynesian Dad)
Scott is a Polynesian dad who is steady and warm. Lani is his daughter: quiet and observational.
The two of them have an easy, unhurried rhythm together. Their home moment finds them on the couch after dinner. Lani is on her phone while Scott watches TV. They each break their focus at times to share moments reacting to what the other is doing.
Their outside moment: Lani and a friend in the yard (or park), laughing about something only they understand. Their trail moment: the two of them walking together. Scott lets Lani set the pace.
– Parent consoling a sad child in the living room
– Child looking at a cell phone. On couch, sitting on a bed, and/or at a table (living room). Can also add a parent into the scene
